CephBase
a new tool
New technology allows for the inexpensive
collection, storage and publication of visual data. It is then readily accessible across
geopolitical borders and at any time.
Specifically, the Internet, relational databases,
current software and code can be used to publish searchable online libraries of
visual data.
The Image Database in CephBase
(Figure 11)
holds an online collection of over 700 images
of cephalopods. Species, keyword, location, photographer or any combination of
these fields can be used to access images.
Each image has a caption explaining important
features, the location the image was taken at and whether the image was created
in a laboratory or the field, the photographer and if known, details such as
the animal's sex and maturity. The
animal’s full taxonomy, common names,
synonymy, location, predators, prey, researchers currently active in the field
and species specific references are only a few clicks away.
